摘 要:Gains from trade depend on the origin of consumed goods: imported, domestic, or home-produced. Using a unique dataset on household consumption across goods and origins, we estimate the impact of trade liberalization on consumer welfare across income levels in Cambodia. Lower tariffs reduce the cost of living directly through cheaper imported final goods and indirectly via lower costs of imported intermediate inputs used in domestic and home-produced goods. Tariff reductions generate a pronounced pro-rich effect, with the cost of living for the top income decile falling approximately four times more than for the bottom decile. The effect is driven by richer households’ higher expenditure share on imported final goods and their greater reliance on domestic goods that use imported inputs more intensively. Ignoring the origin of goods in consumption substantially underestimates the pro-rich effect, and this result may generalize to other low-income countries.
